Mechanical Design Engineer

This position will support the companies’ needs as an Opto-Mechanical Engineer, working on a diverse range of innovative and challenging optical technologies.  We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated leader and flexible designer with the ability to work in a team-oriented environment. This individual will also act as a project manager; this requires scheduling and organizational skills to keep track of multiple jobs at the same time. 

Primary Duties:

  1. Report to the Engineering Manager and manage the design and progress of complex Opto-Mechanical projects through completion.

  2. New product design.

  3. Design and drafting of opto-mechanical mounting configurations to yield optimum performance under various environmental conditions.  Including creation of bill of materials, tolerancing, structural analysis and assembly procedures for said configurations. 

  4. Project management of jobs where this individual is the primary engineer, including managing project risk.

  5. Author clear documentation on mechanical inspection, assembly, and test requirements.

  6. Vendor selection; preferred optical and mechanical shops to produce the optical mounting configurations developed based on price, performance and or delivery for each project awarded.

  7. Assistance with assembly, integration and testing of the optical systems.

  8. Help troubleshoot and solve problems as they arise with the first time builds of prototype optical systems.

  9. Contribute to the engineering team’s endeavors to remain an innovator in this ever-expanding technical market.

  10. Schedule and conduct technical project reviews with management team and customer representatives.

  11. Assist the Engineering Manager to Define KPIs to monitor and improve Engineering standards.

  12. Assist the Engineering Manager to set and document engineering standards, define work process, skills, etc.

Job requirements:

  1. B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

  2. 3-5 years of related experience.

  3. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and communicate effectively through listening, understanding, and supplying timely feedback in both a written and verbal -form.

  4. Mechanical design background and knowledge of general engineering practices.

  5. Familiarity with various manufacturing processes which are essential for the economical design of assemblies, parts and tooling for opto-mechanical applications is a plus.

  6. Several years direct experience with Computer Aided Drafting Systems (SolidWorks).

  7. Knowledge and application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards.

Experience with finite element analysis would be considered a plus.
